내적 풍경에 침투한, 어느 관찰자의 시나리오 ● #1 쿠웅- 커다란 고양이 머리가 갸우뚱 바닥으로 떨어졌다. 한바탕 세상이 기우뚱하며 순간 시공간은 뒤섞인 채 정지 상태가 된다. 앞으로 다가올 엄청난 변화의 기미를 감지한 듯, 그의 시선은 동공이 확장된 채 안과 밖 그 사이에 걸쳐있다. 성유진의 근작 중 유일하게 고개가 바닥을 기대고 있는 이 그림(그의 전체 작품을 통틀어서 유일한 구도)으로 본 전시의 서막을 올린다.

#2 꿈인지 생시인지 고개를 들어보니, 고양이는 고양이 인간이 되어 숙녀처럼 옷을 잘 차려입고선 어느 풍경 속에 있다. 거리의 건물들은 도시의 외양을 하고 있으나 엉성하게 건축되어 있으며 삭막하기 그지없다. 다른 장면에서, 고양이 인간은 광대 분장을 하고는 다른 고양이 인간들과 함께 각자의 상념에 빠져있다. 앞에는 고양이 장난감이 놓여 있으나 이들의 시선 밖이다. 고양이 인간은 계속하여 다른 공간에서 다른 가장을 한 채 등장한다. 그 뒤로 벽이 세워지고, 붉은 커튼이 쳐진다. 고양이와 함께 하던, 까마귀, 그의 분신인 고양이 인형도 등장한다. 이들의 시선은 여전히 이곳에 없다. 벽의 부분이 허물어지고, 문이 열린다. 잠을 청하자, 닫혀있던 커튼이 걷힌다. 그 창문으로 풍경이 스멀스멀 방 안으로 스민다.

#3 한숨 자고 일어나니, 창문으로부터 햇빛이 내리 쬐인다. 몸을 창문 쪽으로 돌려, 빛을 쐬어 본다. 익숙치 않던 시선은 다시 방안으로 향한다.

#4 고양이 인간이 머무는 공간은, 내면에서 바라본 것들이 투영되는 장소이다. 전작에서 작가는 고양이의 얼굴 인상을 통해 자아가 겪는 심리적 정황과 그 심연에 접근했다. 그 이전 작업(초기작)에서 고양이는 몸 그 자체로 일그러지고 왜곡된 모습으로 등장하며 분열된 자아와 다의적인 정체성을 보여줬다. 다시 근작으로 돌아와서, 고양이는 사유로 무거워진 머리로부터 나와 몸을 지니게 되었다. 전전작과는 다른, 인간화된 몸이다. 이 몸으로부터 풍경이 펼쳐진다. 인간의 몸은 개인과 세계 사이의 경계이자 매개체이기에, 고양이 인간의 몸이 머무는 공간은 현실과 유사한 모티브를 가지고 구성된다. 하지만 여기서의 공간은 마치 최면의 상태나 혹은 꿈속의 장면처럼 몽환적이고 비현실적이다. 이는 내면으로 향하던 몸이, 풍경화 되었기 때문이다.

#5 개인에게 내재된 불안, 고립, 우울과 같이 소외된 정감들을 불러일으키며 심리적 공감대를 형성했던 고양이의 인상에 외부 공간적 상황과 현실적 내러티브가 도입된 것은 근작에서 주목할 만한 변화이다. 인간화된 고양이의 몸은 매개적인 이미지로, 몸과 공간, 몸과 풍경, 몸과 배경 사이에 깊숙이 관여하며 관계를 형성해 나간다. 고양이 인간에 의해 구성된 공간은 의식과 무의식, 현실과 꿈, 개인과 세계, 자아와 타자 사이의 수많은 경계들 속에 놓이며 서로가 얽히는 혼종의 상태이다. 이는 내면과 외부 세계 사이에서 끊임없이 간극과 분열을 경험했던 작가의 개인적 고뇌로부터, 두 세계 사이를 매개해보려는 욕망과 소통의 의지에서 비롯한다. 유년기의 옷장을 열어 젖혀 옷에게 바느질을 하여 팔, 다리를 만들어 주거나 화분 속 식물을 의인화하여 독립적으로 개체화한 최근작에서는, 주객체의 위계가 모호해지는 가운데 경계의 전복이 일어난다. 고양이의 머리가 바닥으로 떨어진 순간, 그는 이를 감지했던 것이 아닐까. ■ 심소미

A scenario of some observer who gazes at inner space
● #1 Bump! The cat's big head fell slantwise to the floor. The world slants. Instantly, the space time is jumbled up and freezes. As if it has detected signs of upcoming great changes, it gazes at throughout inner and outer area including the space in between with its dilated pupils. The only painting that features a head leaning on the floor (the unique composition throughout her entire paintings) among the other recent pieces of Yujin Sung, makes a prelude of this exhibition.
● #2 When the cat raises up the head to figure out if it was a dream or for real, it has become a cat human. The cat human is dressed up as a lady and belongs to a landscape. The buildings on the street have a city like appearance but they are loosely constructed and arouse desolate feelings. In another act, the cat human is disguised as a clown, being lost in deep thoughts among others. Before them, there are cat toys that remain out of their sight. The cat human keeps appearing in a different disguisement in another space. The walls are built and the red curtain is drawn behind the cat human. The crow that used to keep company to the cat and the cat doll, the alter ego also appear. Their eyes are still not here. A part of the wall collapses and the door opens. As the cat human tries to get some sleep, the closed curtain is put aside. A landscape permeates into the room through that window.
● #3 After some sleep, the sunlight shines through the window. The cat human turns toward the window and exposes to the sun. The unfamiliar gaze comes back into the room.
● #4 The cat human stays in the space where inner thoughts are projected. In her previous works, the artist questioned oneself's psychological status and its abyss through cat's facial expressions. Before this series, in her earlier works, the cat's distorted body was introduced in order to reveal dissociative ego and diverse identity issues. Coming back to the recent works, the cat has now a body separated from its heavy head full of thoughts. Differing from the one from the earlier series, it is a humanized body. From this body, a landscape spreads out. As a human's body is a border and as well as a mediator between an individual and the world, the space where the cat human's body resides is composed with the patterns similar to the reality. However, this space is dreamy and unrealistic like in a hypnotic state or a fragment of a dream. That's because the body from inner space turned into a landscape.
● #5 There is a noticeable change in her latest series of paintings. If the representation of cat in her previous works has evoked marginal feelings such as anxiety, isolation and depression indwelling within a person, the artist introduced this time new elements such as the outdoor spatial situation and the realistic narrative into the cat's portrait. The body of a humanized cat functions as a mediator deeply involved in creating different links between body/space, body/landscape and body/background. The space composed by the cat human is in the state of hybridism. It is located on the uncountable borders between consciousness/unconsciousness, reality/dream, individual/world and self/other. This aspect has grown from the personal agony of the artist who had experienced constant dissociation and gap between inner and outer worlds. Also, there are the desire and the will of communication in order to mediate these two worlds. In the latest paintings, the artist sews arms and legs onto a cloth by opening up the closet from her youth, or she humanizes a plant to turn it to an independent individual. Through this process of reversing the hierarchy between the subject and the object, the subversion of borders is aroused. At the moment when the cat's head fell down to the floor, she must have detected the sign of it. ■ Somi Sim
