A scenario of some observer who gazes at inner space
¡Ü #1 Bump! The cat's big head fell slantwise to the floor. The world slants. Instantly, the space time is jumbled up and freezes. As if it has detected signs of upcoming great changes, it gazes at throughout inner and outer area including the space in between with its dilated pupils. The only painting that features a head leaning on the floor (the unique composition throughout her entire paintings) among the other recent pieces of Yujin Sung, makes a prelude of this exhibition.
¡Ü #2 When the cat raises up the head to figure out if it was a dream or for real, it has become a cat human. The cat human is dressed up as a lady and belongs to a landscape. The buildings on the street have a city like appearance but they are loosely constructed and arouse desolate feelings. In another act, the cat human is disguised as a clown, being lost in deep thoughts among others. Before them, there are cat toys that remain out of their sight. The cat human keeps appearing in a different disguisement in another space. The walls are built and the red curtain is drawn behind the cat human. The crow that used to keep company to the cat and the cat doll, the alter ego also appear. Their eyes are still not here. A part of the wall collapses and the door opens. As the cat human tries to get some sleep, the closed curtain is put aside. A landscape permeates into the room through that window.
¡Ü #3 After some sleep, the sunlight shines through the window. The cat human turns toward the window and exposes to the sun. The unfamiliar gaze comes back into the room.
¡Ü #4 The cat human stays in the space where inner thoughts are projected. In her previous works, the artist questioned oneself's psychological status and its abyss through cat's facial expressions. Before this series, in her earlier works, the cat's distorted body was introduced in order to reveal dissociative ego and diverse identity issues. Coming back to the recent works, the cat has now a body separated from its heavy head full of thoughts. Differing from the one from the earlier series, it is a humanized body. From this body, a landscape spreads out. As a human's body is a border and as well as a mediator between an individual and the world, the space where the cat human's body resides is composed with the patterns similar to the reality. However, this space is dreamy and unrealistic like in a hypnotic state or a fragment of a dream. That's because the body from inner space turned into a landscape.
¡Ü #5 There is a noticeable change in her latest series of paintings. If the representation of cat in her previous works has evoked marginal feelings such as anxiety, isolation and depression indwelling within a person, the artist introduced this time new elements such as the outdoor spatial situation and the realistic narrative into the cat's portrait. The body of a humanized cat functions as a mediator deeply involved in creating different links between body/space, body/landscape and body/background. The space composed by the cat human is in the state of hybridism. It is located on the uncountable borders between consciousness/unconsciousness, reality/dream, individual/world and self/other. This aspect has grown from the personal agony of the artist who had experienced constant dissociation and gap between inner and outer worlds. Also, there are the desire and the will of communication in order to mediate these two worlds. In the latest paintings, the artist sews arms and legs onto a cloth by opening up the closet from her youth, or she humanizes a plant to turn it to an independent individual. Through this process of reversing the hierarchy between the subject and the object, the subversion of borders is aroused. At the moment when the cat's head fell down to the floor, she must have detected the sign of it. ¡á Somi Sim
